The craziest superstitions in sports

Athletes are a funny bunch, aren’t they? Fueled by ego, fire, heart, and a generous pinch of superstition as well! They are generally creatures of habit, and a lot of successful athletes will have rituals before any game, match, or event. These are often things they will do that are done in exactly the same way every time, and might even be attributed to being lucky.

Not all athletes have rituals or superstitions, mind, but many of them do! In fact, without these superstitions, you might not find your favorite athletes performing at the top of their game! It seems odd that such talented individuals should resort to things as hokey as superstition, but nobody ever said athletes were a simple bunch! Here are some of the craziest superstitions in the sporting world.

Mike Bibby nail clipping

NBA star Mike Bibby had a long and illustrious career and appeared for teams including Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks, and the New York Knicks. He also had one of the strangest customs and superstitions we’ve ever heard of. The point guard used to clip his fingernails on the bench during timeouts! What used to happen is that Bibby used to sit and bite his nails, making everyone nervous as well! So, he decided to fix the issue by clipping his nails – still weird if you ask us!

Bjorn Borg grooming habits

Swedish tennis legend Bjorn Borg is one of the greatest players in the history of the game. And he had some odd customs in the build-up to his matches as well. Going into every Wimbledon tournament, the Swede would always grow his beard and wear the exact same Fila shirt. A new one would never do, it would always have to be the same one he had worn before! It might seem a little dumb, but it did help the maverick Swede to win five consecutive Wimbledon titles, so it must have worked!

Serena Williams court rituals

Serena Williams is one of the finest athletes of all time, and her staggering 23 Grand Slam singles titles marks her as one of the finest tennis players in history. But, even an athlete of the caliber of Serena still has some meticulous on-court rituals she adheres to. She brings her shower sandals onto the court with her and ties the laces of her trainers in a very specific way. She also has a superstition when it comes to her service game, bouncing the ball exactly five times before her 1st serve, and twice before her 2nd serve. Not only that, but she also wears the same pair of socks for a whole tournament too! These things might sound strange or quirky, but they clearly work for her!

These are just some of the strangest and craziest superstitions in the sporting world. These are athletes who show a huge number of quirks and rituals in the build-up to their games. These sound odd to us, but they must work for the mental side of the game. Being a successful athlete is as much about the mental side of the game as the physical one. Superstitions obviously help athletes in their preparations and contribute to their successes.
